Lawton House Historical Marker

We will dedicate the Lawton House Historical Marker on Saturday, February 4th, at 11 am during the Farmer’s Market. The marker will be unveiled at that time by the Mayor of Oviedo, the Oviedo Woman’s Club, the Oviedo Rotary Club and of course our Historical Society. The normal market hours are 8 am to 1 pm.

Oviedo Woman’s Club Quilt Documentation Day

The Oviedo Woman’s Club will host a special event to make records of the wonderful quilts residing in Florida. Bring your quilt and information about the quilt to this free event. Professional quilt appraiser Nan Moore will be available on a first come first serve basis and offer a verbal evaluation for $10 or a written evaluation for $40 if you choose, not required however. The event will be held on Saturday, January 28th from 9 am to 4 pm at the Oviedo Womans Club on King Street.

For more information contact Delaine at 407-359-1475 or gro.bulcsnamowodeivonull@gniwes

Seminole County Historical Society

The Seminole County Historical Society President Don Epps announces a special event called “Help Us Raise the Roof”! The society desires to construct a Outdoor Farm Shelter Replica in celebration of the 100th Year Anniversary of Seminole County. The shelter will be beneficial for special outdoor events and used for many wonderful educational opportunities. For more information and donation opportunities visit the Seminole County Historical Society web site. $50 helps support construction costs, $75 will purchase a truss, $100 will purchase a pole with your name engraved, and $1000 will help with the tin roof. Tax deductable of course!!! Spread the word please.

TOPP Walking Tour

Dont forget about the popular TOPP Walking Tour to be held Saturday, February 18th! This is the 3rd annual walking tour event sponsored by TOPP with great success. Enjoy special pancakes (the secret is in the sauce) prior to the tour. The event is free however a reasonable$5 donation is suggested for the breakfast and $2 for the tour if you would be so kind.

Visit www.oviedotraditions.org for details or call 407-365-1433.

Special Historic Marker

In addition to the Lawton House Historical Marker we will dedicate Saturday, February 4th, we have also received an older marker on Oviedo that was once housed next to the Memorial Building and installed by the Oviedo Rotary Club in the 1970′s. The marker has been refurbished and installed behind the Lawton House next to Friendship Park so visitors to the park can read about Oviedo’s history. A small add on plaque is under development and will be installed soon reflecting this marker on behalf of the Oviedo Rotary Club from years prior. WATER TOWER We expect to have completed soon a set of engineer plans on the replica water tower for the Lawton House. It will not be an exact replica or a working model but will be very close and yet another important piece of Oviedo History to display at this historic site. et your saws, shovels, and hammer ready for a construction day hopefully sometime this year…

The Historical Society members, local civic groups, and City of Oviedo leaders as celebrated having been named one of the Top Ten Family Friendly Cities in America by Family Circle magazine. Wow! What an accomplishment. OHS was asked to participate, and the Oviedo-Winter Springs Life (Mary Pando, Editor) will feature a group photograph in an upcoming edition.
